Look at the woman at the left, she seems to have a lot of papers and numbers in front of her, sometimes put things on the computer helps to organize things, what program do you think she could use to organize her numbers?
STUDENTS WILL RESPOND BY SAYING THAT THE WOMAN LOOKS LIKE SHE IS DISORGANIZED OR HAS LOTS OF INFORMATION TO DEAL WITH, ONE THING THAT MIGHT THROW THE STUDENTS OFF, IS THE SIMILE ON HER FACE.
The graph at the right it pretty well organized, how do you think you could create this on the computer?
STUDENTS WILL RESPOND BY SAYING THAT THE GRAPH LOOKS GREAT, DEPENDING ON HOW MUCH THEY HAVE USED THE COMPUTER, THEY MAY NOT BE FAMILIAR WITH PROGRAMS THAT COULD CREATE THIS, BUT MOST WOULD SAY EXCEL BECAUSE IT IS THE STANDARD PROGRAM FOR MAKING CHARTS
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
1)Realize the usefulness of the Excel in storing and showing data
2)Understand each of the3 steps of using the program
3)Know how it can be employed in different situations
TEACHING AND LEARNING (please open Excel and try out the commands as you are learning)
1)ENTERING DATA AND SELECTING CELLS- The First thing you must learn in the Excel program is how to enter your data
a)Start by creating headings, clip on the box you wish to start with and type in your title
b)To toggle to the next box, push the arrow key on the key board or select the box with your mouse
c)Once you have created you headings, you are ready to enter your data, use the same toggle methods to jump from box to box
2)CREATING FORMULAS- now that your data has been entered, you are going to want to total your numbers
a)Select the cells you want to total-
b)Select the "auto sum" function at the top of the screen on the "tool bar"
c)The sum will automatic appear in the cell to the right or beneath the range of numbers
3)PRODUCING CHARTS-Once all of you information has been calculated onto the computer, you can now create a chart to display that information
a)select the entire field you want to appear on the chart
b)go to the "toolbar" on the top of the screen and select "Chart Wizard" from the menu
c)A box will appear, next choose which type of chart you would like to use and complete the other options
d)to apply your chart click finish
-SAVE YOUR WORK
I THINK THE STUDENTS WILL RESPOND WELL TO THE TUTORIAL IF THEY FOLLOW ALONG WITH THE ACTUAL PROGRAM AND ASK QUESTIONS WHEN THEY NEED TO, IF I WERE TEACHING THIS LESSON I WOULD MAKE SURE TO GO THROUGH IT WITH THEM SLOWLY, POSSIBLY DEMONSTRATING IT ON A PROJECTED SCREEN AND ANSWER QUESTIONS AS I WENT.
CLOSURE:
Excel can be very useful in organizing data and creating charts to use in presenting information in a legible form. It is important that people take advantage of such resources available to them.
