iMovie

Lesson Plan

Bell ringer

Ask how many students have watched a movie in their lifetime? Then ask them how many students have used a computer? How do I get to play a movie or a clip of a movie on a computer?

Students will be able to answer questions 1 and 2. All students have seen a movie at some point in their lives and most have access to use a computer either at home or at school. The third question they won't know some will guess but not many will know the answer. This is where I introduce iMovie for Mac coputers.

SWBAT use the iMovie program to play parts of movies on Mac computers. SWBAT copy and crop videos, add transitions, add titles, add sound or music, and add video effects.

If I told students that they would be able to do all of this they wouldn't believe me. It seems like a lot of information to learn in one program. As we get into the program the students will find out it is easier than it sounds.

OUTLINE

Copy and Cropping a movie clip

Students will find it easy to click and drag a clip of a movie down to the scrubber bar on the bottom of the page. If the bar turns to a yellow color the clip has been put there.

Adding Transitions

Students will find it interesting to see how the transitions work between the clips. If there is a transition button between the clips it means there is a transition between those to clips. The students will be able to grab this.

Adding Titles

Students will be amazed to find out that they can put credits on their clip just like in the movies. This will make the lesson more interesting to the students because you can make them pretend that they are Hollywood producers making films and they can give credits just like Hollywood.

Adding Sound or Music

Students will have fun with music and sounds in clips. It will make the clip more interesting for the students if they can put music with it.

Adding Video Effects

Again this can be referred to Hollywood movies. You can show the students how vidoe effects are put into movies.

Students will find the lesson easy overall. As long as they have computers in front of them they will be able to use the online tutorial for help and I will be assissting them with any other questions. If you are online learning the lesson than the tutorials will walk you through how to use iMovie.

TUTORIAL HOMEPAGE

PRACTICE AND APPLICATION

Have the students copy and crop four different clips. Have them use the all of the effects such as sounds, titles, transitions, etc.

Students will have fun with making their own movies out of the clips. They may have a question on one of the parts but they can always refer back to the tutorial or ask me.

View Video Game Trailers online that are made by using iMovie

Many students have an interest in video games so this website will get their attention. The website shows all some interesting clips that will have students thinking, "I wonder if I can do that?" It will spark interest in using iMovie to make something that they want.

CLOSURE

After assigning the project to the students walk around and see if they understand how to use iMovie. Ask them if they need any help using any part of the software. Assess the students by checking their video clips to see if the understand the lesson.
