Lesson Spread Sheet

Bell Ringer: How do we find the average of our grades in science or math?

If a Student recieved a 90, 96, 85, and 93 what would be their average grade in the class. We all know that we add first then divide by the number of tests (3) and that is how we find our final grade in that subject. But today we are going to find our average grade and the graph it to find the range of the students in our class.

Does anyone know what the picture below is or how it works?

:

This is called a spread sheet and it will help you create a graph for our next lesson on averages.

I don't think that the children will be able to guess what the picture above shows. So I can ask them if they know where you can find the spread sheet? By the picture someone should be able to tell me the computer. Then I would explain how it will help us figure out the averages and how to work the program on the computer. Then Explain to them how if works. I would show them first the how the program works, then we would work together. I would walk them through the program step by step. Then have them try to work on their own. While they are working I would walk around to see how each students was doing. making sure the program was mastered by each child. Finally, ask them if they had any questions, and then move on to the activity that belongs with the program.

Spread Sheet Example

week 1 32 34 32 30 average 32

week 2 28 27 24 20 average 24.75

week 3 25 30 28 25 average 27

week 4 24 26 17 20 average 21.75

Objectives: The Students Should Be Able To: Use Excel Spread Sheet in order to do their assigned activites. Students Should Be Able To average temp of our locaal area and then formuate a chart. This chart will help us see the range of temp.for the month of December.

Input: We are going to practice our division skills by doing playing this game:

Division Game

Reviewing how to find the average. Click here

These websites will help the children by refreshing their memory on division and finding the average for a group of numbers.

Closer:

The activity the children will be working on is finding the average temp. for their area. They will do this by watching the weather weekly. Looking at the website of a local news station. The students will then apply their data to the spread sheet and average the temp, for each week. By the end of the month we will have the average temp for four weeks. We will then graph the temp and discuss the what took place in those four weeks.

By doing this activity with my tests I will be helping them learn how to find the average, learn more about the climate in their local area, and learn how to use a spread sheet.
