Bell Ringer: Comparing the two visual forms that you just saw above which do you feel you learned more from? Which held your attention longer and was more interesting?

Using this bell ringer I hope that students would respond that they learned more from the video because it showed them more than the picture and also that it held their attention because there was action involved not just one still photograph.

Objectives: SWBAT effectively use the iMovie software program and they will also know the essential principles of this program.

I feel that when this lesson was done the students would feel that they had learned something both different and useful. I never had the oppurtunity to learn anything like iMovie in high school and I think that if I knew a program like this I could how wowed a few teachers with a different type of presentation.

Lecture/Discussion: The software program iMovie is used to take film and alter by one of several means. By using iMovie you could add sound, transitions, change the order of the film, cut parts out, and even add your own voice. iMovie is pretty easy to learn how to operate.

You start iMovie by making a movie with a video camera. You then could hook the camera up to the computer to work on editing the video you just made.

There are several easy steps to follow to get started using iMovie!!!!! Follow the steps below with your partner using the iMovie tutorial about the dog.

  1. Once you have the video hooked up to iMovie you will see the different clips appear in the upper right of the computer screen. Drag the clip that you want to work with first ( what you want to be the first part of the movie) and drop it on the time line at the bottom of the screen. You can cut this clip into more than one clip by placing the playhead (line on the clip) at the point you want it to be cut and choosing Edit from the toolbar and then Split Video Clip at Playhead
  2. Add other clips to the timeline at the bottom of the screen as you would like them to appear in the finished movie. Once all the clips you want are in the timeline you can add other features such as transitions, noises, voice and other effects.
  3. To add transitions between clips simply click on the word transitions under the box where the movie clips were previously. A list will appear with different transitions that can be added between clilps. To add a transition between two clips, click on the transition you like and drag it between the two clips and drop it there. A red line will appear under the transition you you know when it is done transferring.
  4. To add other effects such as audio and titles follow the same procedure as for transitions.
  5. You can view the video and make changes to it at any time. To view the video click on the large PLAY button above the timeline.

By not just lecturing to the students but introducing the program to them and then interacting with them as they experimented on their own I feel that the students would learn more from this hands on approach and not be so bored. Technology and computers have a way of grabbing at students attention and I hope that by letting them work with the technology they will be throughly interested in using it.

Activity: Edit and Present your own finished video using iMovie!!!

I believe that the student response to this activity would be positive. They are not just working with a tutorial video but making their own video and using that to make a presentation that they will show the class. I would like to do a project like this and I hope that my students would have the same enthusiam towards it.

Closure: What are the advantages of knowing how to use a software program like iMovie?

This closing simply reviews with the students what the advantages of using a program like this are. This closure would help students to remember the benefits of using not only this program but also other computer software.
